What Old Sydney Wiring Hides

Why a Renovation Is the Moment to Fix the Wiring

The walls are open exactly once. Everything below is cheap now and expensive the day after the plasterer finishes.

!

Cloth and VIR Cabling

Homes wired before the 1960s often still carry rubber-insulated cable with a cloth braid. The rubber goes brittle and drops off the conductor, leaving bare copper inside a wall cavity. It does not get better with age.

!

No Earth on Old Circuits

Early circuits were run without an earth conductor. A modern appliance with a metal case plugged into an unearthed circuit has nowhere to send a fault, and the safety switch protecting it cannot do its job properly.

!

Junctions Buried in Walls

Decades of small additions leave joins taped up inside cavities with no accessible enclosure. Each one is a connection nobody can inspect and a fault nobody can find without opening the wall again.

How a Rewire Actually Runs

The part that matters on an occupied house is sequencing, not cable.

Condition Report First

Insulation resistance tested circuit by circuit before anything is quoted, so you get a scope based on measurements rather than an assumption about the era of the house.

Staged Around You

Work is sequenced room by room so the kitchen and at least one living area keep power overnight. You are told which circuits are down and for how long.

Board Upgraded With It

A rewire ends at the switchboard. New circuits are landed on individual RCBOs rather than reconnected to a board that cannot protect them.

Certified Stage by Stage

A CCEW is lodged for each completed stage rather than one at the end, so a part-finished job is still a documented, compliant job.

Rewiring Questions

What people ask before committing to opening the walls.

Almost never. Work is staged so that power stays on in the parts of the house you are using, with planned outages for the circuits being worked on. A full rewire of an occupied three-bedroom house typically runs across several days rather than one long shutdown.
